A writing style checker for consistent, readable prose

A writing style checker looks past right and wrong to ask whether a passage reads as one consistent piece. Paste a section into the Style Editor and it reviews word choice, terminology, tone, sentence rhythm and formatting habits, then returns written suggestions and a revised version you can compare with your draft. It is most useful when several people, several drafts or an AI model have touched the same text. You set the standard by writing your preferences into the box; the editor follows them and flags places where the passage drifts.

01

What the Style Editor reviews

The review covers the habits that make a passage feel uneven even when every sentence is grammatical, from switching terms halfway through a page to sudden changes in formality or rhythm.

  • Terms, product names and abbreviations used in more than one form.
  • Spelling variants, number formats, dates and title case applied unevenly.
  • Shifts in formality, point of view (we, you, users) or tense.
  • Wordy phrases, clichés and repeated sentence openings.
02

Tell it your house rules

There are no style presets to pick from. Instead, put a few lines of instructions above your text and the editor reviews against them. Short, concrete rules work better than broad goals like “make it professional.”

  • “Use US spelling and the serial comma.”
  • “Write ‘sign in’ as a verb and ‘sign-in’ as a noun.”
  • “Second person, present tense, no exclamation marks.”
  • “Spell out numbers under ten.”
03

Illustrative example

Input: “Our App syncs your files. Once the app has synced, users can share documents with their team — it’s super easy!” The kind of feedback to expect: “App” is uppercase once and lowercase once; the passage moves from “your” to “users”; and “super easy” is more casual than the opening. A suggested revision keeps one term and one point of view. Illustrative only.

04

Working through the suggestions

Start with consistency fixes, because they are usually clear-cut: choose one form of each term and apply it everywhere. Then review the judgment calls on rhythm and word choice, keeping only changes that suit your reader. If you edit heavily, run the passage again to catch anything the edits introduced.

05

Style review or grammar check?

A grammar check asks whether each sentence follows the rules. A style review asks whether the sentences belong together and fit the reader. Many passages need both: correct errors first with the Grammar Checker or Spell Checker, then use the Style Editor to make the voice and conventions consistent.

06

Where consistency matters most

Uneven style is easiest to miss in text that grew over time or was assembled from several sources, because no single writer saw it whole. These are good passages to review first.

  • Help articles and product docs written by different people.
  • Thesis chapters drafted months apart.
  • Marketing pages that mix current brand terms with older names.
  • AI-assisted drafts that switch register between paragraphs.

Style Editor FAQ

How is a style checker different from a grammar checker?

A grammar checker looks for errors in individual sentences. A style checker reviews choices that are not strictly wrong, such as two names for one feature, a slide from formal to casual phrasing, or several sentences that start the same way. The Style Editor focuses on those choices and on consistency across the whole passage.

Can it follow AP, Chicago or my company style guide?

It follows the rules you write in your text. Naming a guide such as AP or Chicago gives it a general direction, but listing the specific rules you care about is more reliable. It does not hold a copy of any style guide, so verify edge cases against the guide itself.

Does it give a readability or style score?

No. The Style Editor returns written feedback and a revised passage, not scores, grades or charts. If you want a numeric measure of reading difficulty, the Readability Score tool reports that separately, and you can use both on the same text.

Will it make my writing sound like someone else?

It is asked to keep your voice and only smooth out inconsistencies, but any AI edit can flatten personality. Protect phrasing that is deliberately yours by saying so in your instructions, for example “keep contractions and short sentences.” You stay in charge of every change.

Can it check US versus British spelling consistency?

Yes. Mixed spelling such as “color” and “colour” in one passage is a typical finding. Tell it which convention to use; otherwise it will usually point out the mix and suggest following the convention your text uses most often.

How long a passage can I review?

You can paste up to 50,000 characters or import a TXT, DOC or DOCX file up to 10 MiB. For long documents, reviewing one chapter or section at a time keeps the feedback focused, and you can reuse the same house-rule lines for each part.

Do I need to sign in?

Yes. Reviews require sign-in and draw words from a paid plan allowance. You can prepare the text and your house rules first. The result can be edited, copied or downloaded, and it can be written in the input language, English, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, French or German.

Review a passage for consistency

Add your house rules above the text so the review checks against your standard, not a generic one.
